Britannia Mine Museum

Overview

Less than a hundred years ago, the Britannia Mine Museum was the largest copper mine in the British Empire. Today, it’s a National Historic Site and Museum. Located only 10 minutes south of Squamish on Highway 99, this museum includes 10 acres of interactive exhibits and underground points of interest. As part of your admission, you’ll also be able to take an underground guided train tour. Experience the sights and sounds of a real mining tunnel!

Yes! The museum can be fun for the whole family. However, there are a few things to be aware of when bringing children:

  • For every child under the age of 3, at least one adult must be present for any underground portion of the museum tour.
  • Children might be bothered by the dark, cold, damp, and noisy conditions of the mining tunnels. Please consider how your young children will handle being underground. The museum admissions staff can provide helpful suggestions and options if you’re unsure whether your child should participate.
  • All guests (including children) must wear a hard hat.
  • Parents/guardians accompanying children will be given earplugs for themselves to use. This is so they can cover their child’s ears during loud demonstrations.

We recommend planning for 1.5 to 2 hours. This will give you plenty of time to fully explore the museum.

Wear comfortable shoes. Consider bringing a sweater or light jacket for the underground portion of the tour.

Due to the original building’s construction and its status as a protected National Historic Site, the underground tour is not wheelchair accessible. However, the rest of the museum — including the Mill building where guests can watch BOOM! and experience all above-ground exhibits — is wheelchair accessible.
